Tar Treasures: Reed Gold Mine
CABARRUS COUNTY, NC – If you love to hunt for gold or have always wanted to explore a gold mine, then a trip to Reed Gold Mine in Cabarrus County should be on your calendar.
Located in Midland, Reed Gold Mine is the first documented gold discovery in the United States.
The historic site retains the original mines where workers dug tunnels and pulled out ponds of earth to search for gold.
Before COVID-19, the mine included guided tours, but now it is self-guided.
One of those guides was Melissa Burris, now a mother and teacher.
“I started touring when I was 15 and continued through high school until I went to college,” Burris said.
Burris said it was while she was working at the mine when she found out she was related to John Reed. He was his sixth great-grandfather.
“And everyone’s like, ‘Oh, did you get any Reed Gold?’ No, no, I got to work here, which is even better, ”Burris said.
Burris continues to visit the mine, taking his 8 year old son and accompanying his friends and family who also like to visit him.
They like to search for gold, which is still done in to place.
