Each week, we interview a notable in Northeast Ohio to find out where he likes to eat in Greater Cleveland. Here are Travis’ five picks for Friday:
1. What is your favorite local restaurant and why?
I really appreciate Coriander (326 S Main St.) in downtown Akron. My wife and I both love Thai food and we have met there several times for lunch. I usually take the Pad Khee Mao and ask for a “4” on the spice scale. Then my wife reminds me that I can only really handle a “3”. There is a great atmosphere and it’s always a good experience. Their location is ideal for a business lunch or a fun dinner and drinks.
2. Where is your favorite place for take out and why?
Tres Potrillos (85 Montrose W Ave, Akron) is just minutes from our house and is probably our favorite local take out. Even before the pandemic, we were getting take out at least once a month. They do a great job with Mexican take out. Everything always tastes fresh and the portions are excellent. Now you can also get take out margaritas so that’s even better.
3. What is your favorite dish / meal to prepare at home?
I love making homemade pizzas. Buying the do-it-yourself dough kits at the grocery store and hand stretching them in your own kitchen is oddly relaxing. Maybe it’s because I worked in a pizza place for a few years in high school. Pizza is a really fun and simple dish that is easily personalized to individual preferences when you prepare it from scratch. Personally, I like to keep it simple with pizza sauce, a mix of mozzarella / provolone cheeses, Italian seasonings, and pepperoni.
4. Do you have a favorite cooking show or cookbook?
My favorite “cooking show” is definitely Children’s Pastry Championship on Food Network. There was even an Akron competitor a few years ago, Davey Treen. I am so impressed with the kids and their amazing desserts. They are all much more talented in cooking than I am and I feel like I learn something new from each episode.
5. Favorite drink or dessert in Northeast Ohio?
I guess I’m a little biased. I own a small ice cream catering business, Penguin Ice Cream, so I have to say my favorite dessert in Northeast Ohio is hand-made ice cream. We organize all kinds of events and parties in Cleveland, Akron and Canton. I’ve always loved ice cream and it turns out running an ice cream business is almost as much fun as eating it.
Bonus question: my favorite dish at Stan Hywet …
I would recommend everyone to try a gingerbread cookie Molly’s Coffee at Stan Hywet. The aroma of cookies baked during Ohio Mart and Deck the Hall fills the grounds. They sell out every year, for good reason.
